How the My IP Address tool works

  1. Open the page. No input is needed — your device's public IP is detected automatically from the connection.
  2. We geolocate your IP. Your IP is matched against geolocation databases to retrieve country, region, city, ISP, ASN and GPS coordinates.
  3. Review & share. Copy the IP with one click, share it with tech support, verify a VPN connection, or cross-check with our DNS & WHOIS tools below.

IPv4 vs IPv6 — what's the difference?

IPv4 addresses look like 76.154.49.194 — four numbers, each 0–255, separated by dots. The format dates from 1981 and gives roughly 4.3 billion unique addresses. With billions of smartphones, laptops and smart-home devices online, that pool is exhausted.

IPv6 addresses look like 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334 — eight groups of hex, giving 340 undecillion unique addresses (effectively unlimited). Mobile carriers and modern ISPs increasingly hand out IPv6 by default. This tool detects and displays both formats automatically when your network supports them.

How to hide my IP address

If the IP shown above is your real home IP, every site you visit sees your country, city and ISP. The practical options to hide or change it:

  • VPN — fastest, covers every app on the device, replaces your IP with the VPN server's. Recommended for streaming and public Wi-Fi.
  • Tor Browser — free, very private, routes traffic through three volunteer relays. Slow for video but excellent for anonymity.
  • HTTP / SOCKS proxy — per-app only, no encryption by default. OK for unblocking sites, weak for privacy.
  • Restart your router — if your ISP hands out dynamic IPs, a reboot can assign you a new one. Doesn't change country.

Why does the city look wrong?

IP geolocation is an estimate based on how your ISP registers its address blocks. Your IP may resolve to a regional data-centre city, not your street. That's normal — it's why legitimate tracking uses GPS, Wi-Fi triangulation and account data, not IP lookups alone.

Frequently asked questions

What is my IP address?

Your IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned by your internet service provider. It identifies your device on the internet and lets websites, games and services send responses back to you. This page detects your current public IP automatically.

What is the difference between a public and private IP address?

Your public IP is assigned by your ISP and is visible to every website you visit — this is the one shown at the top of this page. Your private IP (for example 192.168.1.x) is the local address your router gives devices inside your network and is never visible externally.

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 is the older 32-bit format (e.g. 76.154.49.194) with about 4.3 billion unique addresses. IPv6 is the newer 128-bit format (e.g. 2001:db8::1) designed to handle the huge growth in connected devices. Most home connections still use IPv4, while mobile networks increasingly hand out IPv6.

Why is the location shown not exactly where I am?

IP geolocation is an approximation based on how your ISP registers and routes its address blocks. Many ISPs route traffic through a regional data centre, so the IP may resolve to that city rather than your precise street. VPN and proxy users will see the location of the VPN server.

Can a website track me with my IP address?

Yes — every request you make sends your public IP to the server. Sites can see your country, region and ISP, and combine that with cookies, fingerprinting and account data to identify you over time. A no-logs VPN hides your real IP by routing traffic through one of its own servers.

How can I hide or change my IP address?

The most effective way is a no-logs VPN — it replaces your IP with one from the VPN provider and encrypts the traffic. Alternatives include the Tor browser (slower, higher privacy) and HTTP/SOCKS proxies (less private). Restarting your router sometimes assigns a new IP if your ISP uses dynamic allocation.

Is this IP checker free?

Yes. This tool instantly displays your current public IP with country, region, city, ISP and map coordinates — completely free with no sign-up and no daily limits.
